Comfort Care
Orthodontic emergencies can happen when you least expect them, and we want you to know that our team is always here to help. While true emergencies in orthodontics are rare, most situations can be managed comfortably until you can come in. Below are the most common concerns and what you can do at home.
Experiencing an Urgent Concern?
In an orthodontic emergency, staying calm will serve you best. For anything life-threatening, blood loss or major trauma, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately. For painful but non-life-threatening situations, call our office directly and we'll get you in as quickly as possible.
General Soreness
There is typically an adjustment period once you begin orthodontic treatment, so there’s no need to worry if you feel some oral discomfort. Your mouth may need time to get used to your appliance and the sensation of your teeth shifting into place.
If you experience any pain or discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain medicine or apply orthodontic wax to the areas of your appliance that are irritating. If the discomfort persists beyond a few days, we encourage you to schedule an appointment so we can identify the source and address it.
Poking or Shifted Wire
If a wire is irritating your gums or soft tissue, you can use a clean pencil eraser or a cotton swab to gently push the wire away from the area and back into a more comfortable position. Orthodontic wax placed over the end of the wire can also provide immediate relief.
If the wire has shifted significantly or you cannot manage the discomfort at home, call us and we’ll schedule a quick appointment to trim or reposition it.
Lost or Broken Retainer
If your retainer is lost, broken, or no longer fits properly, contact us right away. Teeth can shift quickly without proper retention, so it is important not to go extended periods without wearing your retainer.
Do not attempt to bend or repair a broken retainer yourself. Bring any broken pieces with you to your appointment so we can assess whether a repair or replacement is needed.
Loose Band or Bracket
If a bracket or band becomes loose, contact our office so we can let you know whether it needs to be seen right away or can wait until your next scheduled visit. In most cases, a loose bracket is not an emergency, but we do want to repair it promptly to keep your treatment on track.
Loose Wire
Mouth Sores or Irritation
If sores persist for more than a week or appear to be worsening, please contact our office. We want to make sure every day of your treatment is as comfortable as possible.
Not sure if your situation is urgent? Give us a call, we’re always happy to help you decide the best next step.
